How it works

Find your ideal body weight using four scientifically-recognized formulas: Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi. Compare the results and get a healthy weight range based on your height, sex, and frame size. Free online calculator, no sign-up required.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your sex and height in centimeters or inches.
  2. Review ideal weight estimates from four classic formulas.
  3. Compare the range rather than fixating on one number.
  4. Check the ranges alongside your BMI and body composition.
  5. Use it as a reference point, not a rigid target.

Example

Inputs: Male, 180 cm (5'11").

Result: Devine 75 kg, Robinson 74 kg, Miller 72 kg, Hamwi 78 kg โ€” range ~72-78 kg.

What it means: A healthy target weight for this height falls somewhere in the 72-78 kg range depending on frame size and muscle mass.

Tips

  • These formulas were developed for medication dosing, not aesthetic goals. Treat the outputs as rough benchmarks only.
  • Frame size matters. Large-framed individuals can carry 5-10% more than the formulas suggest without health risk.
  • Muscular people routinely weigh more than 'ideal' while being perfectly healthy. Body composition outranks scale weight.
  • Use the range as a healthy zone rather than a single target. Anywhere within the range is typically fine.
  • If your current weight is far outside the range, focus on sustainable 0.5-1% body weight changes per week rather than sprinting to an arbitrary number.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ideal weight formula is the most accurate?
No single formula is universally most accurate. The Devine formula is the most widely used in clinical settings, but Robinson and Miller formulas tend to give more realistic targets for people at the extremes of height. It is best to look at the range across all four formulas rather than relying on just one.
Does ideal weight account for muscle mass?
No. Ideal weight formulas are based on height and sex only, so they do not distinguish between muscle and fat. A muscular athlete may weigh well above their calculated ideal weight while still being in excellent health. Use body composition tools like a body fat calculator for a more complete picture.
Should I use ideal weight as my goal weight?
Ideal weight calculators provide a general reference range, not a strict target. Your personal goal weight should also factor in your body composition, fitness level, and overall health. Consult a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your weight.
